Site Supervisor Safety Training Scheme

The construction industry is a complex, and demanding environment to work in. Companies across the UK need to keep up with the advancement of technology, scale of commercial and residential projects, and the regulatory change that we are facing because of Brexit. To tackle some of these challenges, CITB (Construction Industry Training Board) has introduced the Construction Skills and certificate scheme (CSCS) training courses, to help workers to operate in a safe, efficient, and reliable manner. The Site Supervisor Safety Training Scheme (SSSTS) is a CSCS Course intended for individuals to gain the skills and expertise to lead a team and work as a supervisor.

On-site supervisors and managers are solely responsible for the safety of their workforce, so they must be armed with key knowledge and skills of how to maintain health and safety principles in a working environment. The SSSTS course is designed to help construction supervisors identify onsite risks and be able to take the necessary steps to curb or minimize their danger. Supervisors and managers that have completed an SSSTS course will become confident in communicating with the wider team to ensure that the work environment, is running smoothly, and as safe as possible.

What are the benefits of being SSSTS certified?

Completing an SSSTS certification is crucial step to take if you are serious about working in the construction industry and becoming a qualified on-site supervisor. Once you reach the end of your SSSTS certification course, you will be expected to possess the following knowledge and skills:

  • An awareness of how to conduct onsite risk assessments Understand why certain accidents in the construction industry happen and what actions could prevent them.

  • Knowledge about handling health issues of workers when they arise on a construction site.

  • Your role as a supervisor during a work emergency

  • Have a thorough understanding of Guidance notes and approved codes of practice on the worksite.

  • Understanding how the role of a supervisor interacts with that of the site manager in maintaining onsite safety.

  • Knowledge of the legal requirements and rules on health and safety on the worksite.

How can I get an SSSTS certificate:

To acquire an SSSTS certification, all participants must attend a 2-day training course (remotely may be possible due to COVID-19) in which they will undergo training sessions and meet all the other participants in the course. To maximise your chances of passing an SSSTS certificate, you will have to have good spoken and written English and have a background in construction. By the end of the 2-day course, everyone will be required to take a multiple-choice assessment (more information about this assessment can be found on our website here). Once you complete your exam and it is approved by the training board or company, everyone will be awarded the Site Supervisor Safety Training Scheme certificate.
